Performance Poetry

Next week we will be starting our poetry unit.

For your homework this week, you have been asked to read some poems (you could use poetry books from home or from the library, or look on the internet: poemsforchildren.org is a good place to start). We would like you to prepare one your favourite poems to perform to the class next week. Please try to learn as much as possible of the poem (at least one verse) off by heart.

Think about what makes a good poetry performance. The link below will take you to a performance of one of my favourite poems, Macavity The Mystery Cat by T.S. Eliot, performed by Michael Rosen. If you get chance, watch the performance. What makes it a good performance? How can you incorporate some of this into your poetry performance next week?

There are also links to other poetry performances on the side of the BBC page. Watch some of them if you get chance.

  1. Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed--
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

  2. As the moon came up,
    the wolf sat down.
tonight he can`t just roam around.
    It can`t be fair,
    it can`t be right!
For mum to keep him in tonight.
    He should be out,
    he should be prowling.
but instead he sit here scowling!!!!

  3. Holding hands
    Elephants walking along the trails
Are holding hands and holding tails
Trunks and tails are handy things
When elephants walk in circus rings

    Elephants walk and elephants play
And elephants walk and elephants also talk
And when they walk it never fails
By holding hands and holding tails

    Two one’s are two
    Two two’s are four
    Don’t fancy them any more
    Two threes are six
    Two fours are eight
    I want another playdate
    Two fives are ten
    Two six’s are twelve
    Two sevens are fourteen
I looked like a beauty queen
    Two eights are sixteen
    Two nines are eighteen
I look just like a beauty queen

  4. Vuvuzelas what a lot of noise
World cup a lot of boys
    Blue,white strips
    Celebrations of flips
    All the football stars
    Have all the best cars
    Messi scored a goal
    Then Ronaldo's boots got stole
    That ball is too light
I can see the players on there flight

  5. cristiano ronaldo dos santos Averio
is his full name But it were only his skills
that eventually made him gather such fame

    he gave his career
    a tremendous start
and sometimes whith his powerful shoot
he tends to tear the goal-net apart

whacking him play on the field
    the audience tends to hoot,
    Because there is no goal-keeper,
    Who can block your powerful shoot;

    He is the man,
    Called the 'Free-Kick King',
Because when he shoots the ball,
    It goes with an erratic swing;

  6. I have a cat
    her name is mish
    her fur is white
    and she likes fish

    she hunts and walk
    about my house;
    she always out
    to catch a mouse.

    I play with her,
    and I keep her clean;
    a smarter cat,
    you`ve never seen.
